A surprisingly large number of people today do not understand where their feelings come from. Many people have no understanding of why they feel like they do. Typically people blame life events or other people for making them feel a certain way. I can personally attest to this way of thinking, because I myself used to blame other people and life events for making me feel anxious and unsatisfied.
Unfortunately blaming other people and events for making us feel the way we do is inaccurate and detrimental to the individual. The truth of the matter is that our thinking, and the way we choose to react to things has a much greater impact on how we feel emotionally. To put it simply, our thoughts create our emotions.
Therefore it is important to remember that what you feel is actually result, or representation of what you are thinking. This comes in handy because if you start experiencing “bad feeling” emotions, you can be sure they are a result of negative thought patterns.
Viewed from this perspective, your emotions become handy indicators, or warning signs that your thinking is getting “out-of-whack.”
Yet how can this new perspective aid us in feeling better about ourselves and our lives? The ability to guide one’s thoughts from a negative to more positive direction can have a dramatic impact on a person’s overall sense of well-being. A person who is aware of their thoughts and the impact thoughts have on emotions, can start to guide their thoughts towards the positive end of the spectrum. With each improved thought, the person will notice that they feel slightly better.
Pay attention to your body and allow your emotions to serve as indicators to your thinking. Emotions like doubt, anxiety, fear and sadness tell you that you are thinking negative and detrimental thoughts. Emotions like joy, happiness, hope and encouragement tell you that your thinking is leaning towards the positive end of the spectrum.
Do not expect dramatic shifts in how you feel in the short term. The journey to feeling wonderful does not last 24 hours. Instead this is a life long commitment to feeling good. You will notice that you feel slightly better one step, one thought at a time. Over the course of months and years you can become a genuinely happy, satisfied individual.
However with each positive thought you think, you will feel a slightly better. If you consistently guide your thoughts in a positive direction, you will notice that you gain considerable momentum, and thinking positively becomes easier and easier.
Negative thoughts and emotions are natural. Expect to encounter negative thoughts and emotions from time to time. However you now possess the ability to recognize and guide negative thoughts in a more positive direction-before your negative thinking consumes you.
